The Bahamas temporarily banned American travelers from entering because of COVID-19, but now must quarantine for 14 days.

Three weeks after the Bahamas reopened its borders, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis barred American tourists from entering the country, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bahamas has now reversed its U.S. travel ban.

The situation had deteriorated “at an exponential rate since we reopened our international borders” July 1st, Minnis said. The country’s national airline Bahamasair had immediatly ceased flights to the U.S.A. Minnis blamed how nearby countries were handling the COVID-19 pandemic that is “still raging around the world.”

“In neighboring countries, hospitals are overwhelmed, and deaths are increasing. For some places, it is unclear when or how they will get this virus under control,” Minnis said.

He added: “Our current situation demands decisive action, if we are to avoid being overrun and defeated by this virus. We cannot allow our hospitals to be overrun. Many priorities must be balanced, be they health, social and economic. Chief amongst these though is the health.”

Less than a week afterwards, The Bahamas has reversed a U.S. travel ban, changed course on closing its border to U.S. travelers. The Attorney General recently said all international visitors are now welcome.

However, visitors must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival — at their own expense — in a government facility. They will also have to take a real time COVID-19 laboratory test at the end of their isolation. The press release didn’t offer a reason for the reversal.

The new orders didn’t specify the requirements for visitors on pleasure boats, or private or chartered aircraft. Providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test allowed the latter to enter. The Bahamas still allowed tourists from Canada, Europe and the U.K. on commercial flights.

The U.S.A., and Florida State in particular (about 50 miles off the coast), represents its largest tourism market. The country itself is still recovering from the economic devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in 2019.
