Istanbul, formerly Byzantium and Constantinople, is the most populous city in Turkey and the country’s economic, cultural and historic center. It’s a transcontinental city in Eurasia, straddling the Bosporus Strait. Its commercial and historical center lies on the European side, while about 1/3 of its population lives in suburbs on the Asian side.

Byzantion was founded around 660 B.C.E. It grew in size and influence to become one of the most important cities in history. After being reestablished as Constantinople in 330 C.E., it served as an imperial capital for almost 16 centuries. This was during the Roman/Byzantine, Latin, Palaiologos Byzantine and Ottoman empires. It was instrumental in advancing Christianity during Roman and Byzantine times. The Ottomans conquered it in 1453 C.E., who consequently transformed it into the seat of the Ottoman Caliphate. This Ottoman capital remained Constantinople until 1923, but then moved to Ankara and renamed Istanbul.

It held a strategic position between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, being the only sea route between the two. Istanbul controlled rail networks between the Balkans and the Middle East and was also on the historic Silk Road. Ankara became the new Turkish capital following the Turkish War of Independence in 1923 and then became Istanbul. Nevertheless, the city maintained its prominence in geopolitical and cultural affairs. Towards the end of the 20th century, the city began hosting arts, music, film, and cultural festivals. Moreover, infrastructure improvements have produced a complex transportation network there.

Fanning out from Taksim Square with its Republic Monument, Taksim is a busy nightlife, shopping, and dining area. 19th-century buildings that contain international shopping chains, movie theaters, and cafes line Istiklal Caddesi – the city’s main pedestrian boulevard. Bars, antiques shops, and rooftop eateries with Bosphorus views fill the dense network of side streets. Discover the 6 top places to visit in Turkey.
